The Lilium Jet will be the world’s first all-electric, vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) jet, but technological innovation aside, the project is a graceful design
At an airfield hangar near Munich, where Lilium’s HQ is based, a multi-disciplinary design team is hard at work on one of the most anticipated technologies of the 21st century. The Lilium Jet will be the world’s first all-electric, vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) jet. Technological innovation aside, it instantly strikes you as a state of grace and beauty. The minimalist exterior flows elegantly from the nose and canards to the main wings at the rear, 30 quiet but powerful electric jet engines are integrated into the wing flaps.
“We aimed to design a timeless and approachable exterior, that generates attraction and creates a strong bond to the passenger”, Thomas Vanicek, Head of Design, explains. “But our cabin experience and interior design are so extraordinary that we believe our customers will fall in love with the Lilium Jet immediately.”From day one, a perfect harmony between science and fine arts was key to truly create something game changing. It fuses the full potential of electric propulsion with the first of its kind design – delivering radical better way of mobility with zero operating emissions.
The Lilium design department consists of a highly engaged, diverse and multidisciplinary team that is focusing on a holistic design approach
“The interior is designed as one big capsule. We intentionally radically differentiated our design from every common helicopter or business jet design to reinvent a significantly new architecture. No sharp corners, no boxy shapes, the iconic cabin embraces the passenger – we call it: Space Sphere Cabin. Every line and the CMF is following our seamless flow philosophy, by creating different horizontal spheres to extend the spacious cabin feeling and maximize perceived safety, the comfort and lifts you up in a pleasant atmosphere during your flight.”
Our cabin XP & flow
Our mission doesn’t stop here. The Lilium design department consists of a highly engaged, diverse and multidisciplinary team that is focusing on a holistic design approach. The team is validating all ideations through smart mockups to accelerate the process through the design sprints. Every detail of the Lilium Jet is well considered. “We’re looking for the most circular, sustainable material options. Therefore, we’re choosing long-lasting, easier to recycle materials, such as undyed fabrics and bio-based leather. We’re looking at bringing new sustainable materials into the aviation world as well, to offer our customers a full spectrum of individualisation and personal touch”, says Thomas Vanicek.
